Meet David Peyton, an exceptional individual whose journey from humble beginnings to becoming Yazoo County Supervisor, District 4, is one defined by compassion, service, and a relentless pursuit of positive change.
Born and raised in Yazoo City, Peyton's story began at Yazoo City High School, where his passion for knowledge and success first took root. Graduating in 1984, it was clear that he possessed an insatiable thirst for learning and a determination to make a difference. This drive led him to Alcorn State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1988, laying the groundwork for his future contributions to the field of public health.
Peyton's passion for public health flourished during his time at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a Master of Public Health, Policy, and Administration in 1994. Equipped with this advanced degree, he embarked on a career spanning over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Mississippi State Department of Health.
For 30 years, from 1989 to 2019, Peyton served as a dedicated employee of the Mississippi State Department of Health, specializing in Communicable Disease Prevention. Throughout his tenure, he managed grants exceeding two million dollars, demonstrating his exceptional fiscal responsibility. As a true leader, he supervised over 60 staff members statewide, ensuring the effective implementation of crucial programs. Notably, Peyton's commitment extended beyond the confines of the office, as he fostered collaborative relationships with community stakeholders, playing a pivotal role in developing community-based communicable disease programming.
Beyond his successful public health career, Peyton's entrepreneurial spirit and diverse interests have allowed him to flourish in various ventures. As the owner of Peyton Unlimited, LLC, he has provided consulting services and managed both e-commerce and in-person businesses specializing in handmade products. Through his endeavors, he has not only explored new avenues but also contributed to the growth of the local economy.
However, Peyton's dedication to his community extends far beyond entrepreneurial pursuits. As the CEO/President of Gateway Solutions, Inc., a nonprofit organization, he has tirelessly worked to address critical issues in the Greater Yazoo County area. With a focus on education, health, economic development, and social concerns, Peyton has spearheaded initiatives that have brought tangible improvements to the lives of countless individuals.
Peyton's involvement in community and civic organizations is a testament to his unwavering commitment to service. As a respected member of the Mt. Vernon M. B. Church, he serves as a Deacon, Trustee, and Minister of Music, using his talents to uplift and inspire his congregation. Peyton is also an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Epsilon Lambda Chapter, and the Metro Jackson National Panhellenic Council, where he has forged connections and collaborated with like-minded individuals.
Recognizing the importance of education, Peyton has taken on the role of Chairman of the Yazoo City Community Engagement Council for the Yazoo City Public Schools. Through this position, he advocates for the needs of students and strives to create an environment conducive to their success. Additionally, Peyton is a member of the Mississippi and National Community Health Worker Associations, as well as the Yazoo City and Humphreys County Health Networks. These affiliations reflect his ongoing dedication to public health and his commitment to empowering individuals through education and awareness.
Family has always been a cornerstone of Peyton's life. He is the son of the late Judge A. J. Peyton and Myra Peyton, who instilled in him the values of integrity, compassion, and community service. Peyton is also a proud father to his daughter, D'Avia Henry-Peyton, who undoubtedly serves as a constant source of inspiration in his life.
Driven by his passion for youth mentorship, economic development, financial literacy, public health, and community safety, Peyton has stepped forward as a candidate for Yazoo County Supervisor, District 4. With a firm commitment to transparency, accountability, and accessibility, he aims to be the voice that champions the concerns and aspirations of Yazoo County citizens.
As the 2023 Graduate of Community Research Fellow Training sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi, Peyton possesses the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to tackle the challenges facing his community.
